Fire Door Ajar

Ignoring the signs:
“warning: keep closed at all times,”
“emergency exit only”
the door is kept ajar.
Keeping options open
fans the flames of doubt
used to
set oneself afire,
to see if there is life
après smoke inhalation.
Crippled close enough to burn?
Far away enough to breathe.?
